The Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit in Limpopo has officially made history as Africa’s very first Verified Net Zero (VNZ) hotel, and only the tenth worldwide for the Radisson Hotel Group. This isn’t greenwashing or a vague marketing claim, It’s an independently verified benchmark audited by TÜV Rheinland. The property virtually eliminates direct operational emissions and purchased energy emissions, dramatically cuts supply-chain impact, and offsets residual footprint through certified nature-based carbon removals.
We embarked on a mini excursion to go and experience this first hand at The Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit and during our stay, what impressed us most was how this rigorous environmental science translated into a seamless, welcoming getaway where sustainability felt completely second nature.

The hotel’s zero-emissions model starts with the sun. The entire 138-room property runs on 100% renewable electricity, powered by on-site rooftop solar arrays alongside clean power supplied through SolarAfrica. Electrification touches everything behind the scenes, from energy-efficient heat pumps that heat guest water to the whisper-quiet electric golf carts and utility buggies used across the grounds.
Guest rooms carry the eco-ethos right down to the smallest detail. Our morning coffee came from 100% compostable pods, eliminating single-use plastic and aluminum entirely. In the bathroom, all shower gels, shampoos, and soaps are organic, biodegradable, and packaged in closed-loop, refillable containers.

One of the most fascinating parts of our stay was getting a behind-the-scenes look at the hotel’s closed-loop food ecosystem. The kitchen prioritizes low-carbon menus and works closely with local farm partner Egg Brothers:
- Zero Food Waste: Every kitchen prep offcut and leftover scrap is carefully collected rather than sent to a landfill.
- Natural Feed Cycle: The farm uses those organic scraps to cultivate black soldier fly larvae, creating a nutrient-dense, natural diet for their free-range chickens.
- The Return: Those hens lay fresh, pasture-raised eggs that head straight back to the hotel’s breakfast buffet.
The property’s water story was equally inspiring. Knowing that the drinking water is sourced directly from a clean local natural spring gave every glass an authentic connection to the surrounding land. At the same time, water conservation in Limpopo’s dry bushveld is paramount. The hotel treats 100% of its greywater through an on-site filtration plant. This recycled water is fed directly into the expansive indigenous gardens, creating a lush, cool sanctuary teeming with native birdlife without tapping into local municipal supplies.

Attending the grand opening alongside sustainability leaders, hospitality executives, and keynote speakers brought the entire vision into focus. Hoedspruit proves that a hotel doesn’t have to compromise on comfort, charm, or great hospitality to tread lightly on the earth. Our stay was inspiring, incredibly relaxing, and proof that the future of travel in Africa is already here.
