Founder of Local Skincare Brand, Mhudi Naturally, Makes Skincare Gold Using Amasi

In the heart of Mthatha, a young entrepreneur is quietly building a skincare brand rooted in culture, sustainability, and innovation. Nthabiseng Ntsondwa, founder of Mhudi Naturally, is taking something deeply familiar in many South African homes – amasi – and transforming it into a modern skincare essential.

At a time when the global beauty industry leans heavily on synthetic ingredients, Mhudi Naturally is doing the opposite. The brand is going back to basics, drawing inspiration from African traditions and reimagining them for today’s skincare routines.

A cultural staple, redefined

Amasi has long been a part of South African heritage, known for its nutritional value and connection to home. But beyond the kitchen, it holds powerful benefits for the skin.

Through fermentation, amasi becomes rich in lactic acid, a gentle exfoliant that helps remove dead skin cells and reveal smoother, brighter skin. It also helps the skin retain moisture, making it ideal for people dealing with dryness, sensitivity, acne, or eczema. For Ntsondwa, this wasn’t just about creating a product, it was about honouring a legacy. “Our goal was to honour the ingredients our grandmothers knew were powerful, but in a way that fits into a modern skincare routine,” she explains.

Handmade with purpose

Each Mhudi Naturally soap bar is handcrafted in Maqhinebeni village in Mthatha, using a cold-process method that preserves the quality of its natural ingredients. The result is a product that feels both luxurious and intentional.

Their signature product, The Calabash Soap Bar, blends full cream amasi with nourishing ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, activated charcoal, kaolin clay, and essential oils such as eucalyptus and camphor. The combination not only cleanses but supports the skin’s natural balance, leaving it soft, hydrated, and refreshed. Beyond skincare, the brand is also committed to sustainability. Packaging is 100% biodegradable, aligning with a growing movement among South Africans to make more eco-conscious choices.

More than just skincare

Mhudi Naturally is more than a beauty brand—it’s a statement. It represents a shift towards embracing African ingredients, supporting local production, and creating inclusive beauty solutions that speak to real people and real needs.

At just R80 a bar, the product is accessible, while still delivering on quality and care. And with a WhatsApp-based shop already up and running, Ntsondwa is building her business step by step, with a website on the way. In a world where beauty trends often come and go, Mhudi Naturally stands firm in something deeper: heritage, authenticity, and pride. For Nthabiseng Ntsondwa, the mission is clear, to redefine beauty through the lens of Africa, one bar of soap at a time.
