The 18 Trouble Makers Football Club is a local club based in Kingsburg west, Amanzimtoti. On 9 August, while the country marked Women’s Day, 18 Trouble Makers Football Club marked it their own way with boots on the ground and kids on the field.
The Kingsburgh West-based club locally known as Abafana Bespice hosted a community tournament celebrating Women’s Month, bringing together both netball girls and soccer boys in the under-11, under-13, and under-15 divisions. But for the club, it was never just about the score.
“We Don’t Want Them to Forget”
Speaking about the reason behind the tournament, club representatives said the goal was to make sure young people remember the importance of Women’s Day and Women’s Month in South Africa.
“Women are the foundation,” they said. “We wanted the boys especially to be on the field and learn the importance of females in their lives.”The event was also intentional about keeping children engaged in positive activities.
“Instead of being outside doing drugs and other bad things, we wanted them on the field,” the club explained. “Sport teaches discipline, respect, and community.”
Community Backing Makes It Possible
The tournament was made possible by three key sponsors: Amapelepele (Spice for Africa), SM Hygiene, and Aquelle.
Spice for Africa, the club’s biggest sponsor, went beyond funding, they provided soccer boots for the kids and food for everyone on the day. Their support helped 18 Trouble Makers FC deliver what the club called a “successful and meaningful” day for Kingsburgh West community.
More Than a Game
For 18 Trouble Makers, the tournament was about legacy. Teaching the next generation that Women’s Month is not just a date on the calendar, but a value to live by.And that the best way to honour women is to build communities where boys and girls both have a place to play, grow, and be guided. Because some lessons are best learned on the field.
